Girls Softball Team Beats W. Warwick 3-2 For DII State Championship

As classmate Andrew Miner tweeted, “@wackyjackie’s got ice in the veins.”

Miner and everyone else at the softball field at Rhode Island College were on the edge of their seats during game three of the Division II state final against West Warwick, as Jackie DeFusco, newly minted EGHS alum, stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and two on base, and a 2-2 score.

DeFusco singled into right centerfield, allowing Brooke Andreozzi to score the game-winning run that propelled the EGHS Avengers to their third state championship in four years.

Sophomore pitcher Cora Geunes got the win after relieving senior Becca Black in the second inning. Geunes pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out six.

The score tied going into the bottom of the seventh, Andreozzi and Hannah Anderson got on base, then DeFusco came up.

You can read a poem here from Jackie DeFusco’s mom about the six now-graduated seniors who’ve played together for 12 years.
