EGHS’s undefeated varsity football team seemed well positioned as they headed into this afternoon’s Division II playoff game against rival Woonsocket. But experience has taught the Avengers not to discount the Novans who, despite many penalties, ended up with the win Saturday afternoon, 7-6, and a spot in the DII state championship.

Punts and turnovers on downs were the name of the game in the first half resulting in a 0-0 score as the teams left the field.  Woonsocket eventually got past the Avenger defense to score in the third quarter, bringing the score to 7-0. With seconds left in the game, EG finally scored and decided to go for a 2-point conversion. The ball was handed off to Jack McMullen (2) who quickly dove for the goal line.

The Avenger sidelines and stands erupted thinking that EG made the play, but after an extended conference, officials called the play short resulting in Woonsocket storming the field in an early celebration resulting in a 15-yard penalty against the Novans.  The Avengers attempted an onside kick which was unsuccessful, ending the Avengers playoff run.

Fans have another shot to see the 2019 Avengers in action at their Thanksgiving day game against Chariho, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Carcieri Field.
