The 10-year run of the East Greenwich Farmers Market has come to an end … for this year anyway. That’s the word from former EGFM manager Tracie Huffman Truesdell.
Last fall, Truesdell stepped down from managing the market but she remains involved. She said earlier this week the market would not open this season. Truesdell made the task of running the EGFM look easy but since she started the EGFM in 2007, the Goddard Park Farmers Market has grown and other markets have sprung up, making it hard for smaller markets like East Greenwich to attract vendors. In addition, state-run farmers markets like Goddard are free for the vendors. EGFM charges vendors a fee.
The market was going to have to vacate Eldredge this season regardless, because of the work that needs to be done on the gym ceiling, which suffered a partial collapse a few months ago. It had been slated to move back to Academy Field.
So, friends, if you are feeling a little aimless on a Monday afternoon this summer into fall, we feel your pain. Let’s hope the market returns next year.
Thank you, Tracie, for having made EG more vibrant for a decade. Must all good things come to an end?
