We’ve already had a taste of winter (even some white stuff!), which means pulling out the snow shovels, making sure the snow blower has fuel, stacking wood near the door. It’s also a good time to sign up for the Town of East Greenwich’s emergency notification system.

The town has two notification tools available to provide information to residents and you can sign up for both on the town website (http://eastgreenwichri.com/). Look for the “East Greenwich Alerts” box on the left side of the home page near the top.

eNews – This is a weekly email with information of interest for residents that may include trash collection details, meeting schedules, general interest items and/or upcoming events. It is also used in the event of an emergency. You sign up by entering your email address in the box indicated above.

If you would like to receive this email notification, please just enter your email address and press GO.

Emergency Notification System – This is the tool the town uses to call as many households (land lines and/or cell phones) as possible with very important information. It is for emergency use, primarily, but can be used for road closures, water main breaks, etc. The town has the ability to send a phone message out to all phone numbers in the database or to only a select few numbers based on a map selection. You sign up by clicking the link “Sign up for Emergency Notification System” or just click here. This link takes you to the login page for your account.

There have been a few changes to the technology – the  town can now send text messages and emails in addition to the phone calls. In order to make changes to how the town reaches you, you can use the link on the home page, enter the contact information, name and address and then using your phone number (no hyphens or dashes) let us know how to contact you. If you would like an email, please add your email address.

If you would like to opt out of the system and do not have an account, please email [email protected] with the following information: name, address and phone number. You can also call the IT Department at 401-886-8670 and we will be glad to assist.

General information:

•    If a number is in the database more than once, duplicates are ignored when the call goes out.
•    This tool is used sparingly – it could definitely become an annoyance rather than a useful tool.
•    You can add as many numbers as you would like.
•     If you have already notified us to be added, your number is in the database.
