Matthew Wegrzyn has been named one of two state winners in the Wendy’s High School Heisman Program, which honors scholar-athletes. It’s the second time in two years that an East Greenwich High School student has made that cutoff. Last year, Andrew Miner was a Rhode Island state winner; he went on to win the entire competition.
“Matt Wegrzyn is a phenomenal young man and I am not surprised at all to hear he has been nominated for this award. He is very deserving,” said EGHS Boys Basketball coach Matt Records.
“Matt has put in a tremendous amount of mental and physical practice to crack the varsity starting five this year as a senior,” said Records. “He was on track to do so until an unfortunate injury this summer, which will not allow him to compete on the hardwood this year. However, Matt will play the role of Coach Wegrzyn during the 2014 -2015 season. He offers a tremendous amount of leadership and commitment. I look forward to him sharing his knowledge with younger players during the season.”
The injury sidelined him during the cross country season as well, but Wegrzyn was there to support his teammates throughout.
“It was really great to see his name on that list,” said Boys Cross Country and Track coach Peter Dion. “He’s kind of an under-the-radar guy, always taking care of everybody else. That’s why he’s made a good captain.”
In 2013, Andrew Miner was the boys state winner and went on to win the entire competition.
Congratulations to Matt and his family and the entire EG community!
