1:18 p.m.  – An East Greenwich man told police his son’s ex-girlfriend had started calling again, both his cell phone and his wife’s. He said they’d gotten 25 calls in the past two days from her and he said he’d seen her driving past their house. There is an active protective order against the woman with regard to the EG man. Police were attempting to contact the woman.

3:39 p.m. – An East Greenwich woman told police she’d received a credit card in the mail with a $4,000 credit limit that she had not requested. When she talked to the card issuer, they said there had been one attempted purchase using the card but that the bank’s fraud unit had intervened and the sale had not gone through. The woman contacted all three credit agencies to make sure no other cards had been opened in her name and put a freeze on her credit accounts so no new activity could take place.

5:39 a.m. – Police arrested Joseph Benech, 57, of Richmond, on two felony counts of sexual assault, one charge of simple assault and one charge of buying liquor for someone under the age of 21. An East Greenwich woman, 18, told police Oct. 20 about the alleged assaults on Oct. 6, saying the man was a friend of her father’s and she was meeting with him in connection with her senior project. She said he took her in his car and bought her two margaritas from a liquor store, then parked at the EG boat launch and started to touch her. According to the victim, Benech said he’d always found her attractive and he’d been waiting until she turned 18. She said he asked her several times to go to a hotel with him and she said no. She said eventually they returned to her house, where the man stayed to talk to her father. She said he’d been texting her since then and she was worried he would try something while her father was away. Benech was arraigned and bail was set at $15,000 surety. He was ordered to stay away from the woman and her house.
