Obituary: Richard E. “Dick” Olson, 84

Richard E. “Dick” Olson, 84, passed away July 12. He was the husband of the late Frances E. (Chace) Olson. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late John E. and Lucille M. (Frederickson) Olson.
 
Mr. Olson was the owner and operator of Richard E. Olson Hydraulic Backhoe Service for over 65 years. He was an Army Korean War Veteran, an avid outdoorsman, a championship skeet and rifle shooter, a private pilot, a hot air balloonist, a photographer known for his pictures of the Tall Ships and scenery, a founding member of the R.I.I.C.A., a member of King Solomon Lodge and a member of the Narragansett Gun Club.
 
He is survived by his son, Mathew R. Olson and his wife Heidi and grandson, John R. Olson. He was the brother of the late Robert V. Olson.
 
His funeral service will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Calling hours are Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the DAV, 1 Capitol Hill, Providence, RI 02908.
