Obituary: Frederick E. ‘Popeye’ Cookson, 87

Frederick E. Cookson, “Popeye,” EGFD (Ret.) 87, passed away May 25. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth L. (Young) Cookson. Born in East Greenwich, he was a son of the late Harry Cookson, Sr., and the late Florence (Zubee) Cookson.

Mr. Cookson was retired dispatcher for the East Greenwich Fire Department and a shell fisherman.

Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Victoria M. Pawlak and Gary W. Cookson and granddaughter, Jessica R. Brennan. He was the brother of the late Harry, Jr., and William Cookson. Committal with military honors will be held Thursday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Contributions his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
