‘Music on the Hill’ Festival Opens June 2

by | May 28, 2019

Music on the Hill opens its 45th annual music festival on Sunday, June 2, with an outdoor concert at Clouds Hill Farm just up Post Road in Warwick, and continues for 10 days of music making across the state, including one concert at the First Baptist Church on Peirce Street.

Music on the Hill was born in East Greenwich. Today, it’s become an opportunity to showcase RI-raised musicians who return for a visit as well as local talent. Only Music on the Hill performs in five different venues in four towns around the Ocean State, in intimate venues where the audience sits up close to the action. Musicians play in a variety of ensembles in multiple concerts. Tickets are just $25 at BrownPaperTickets.com or at the door (cash or check). As always, students with I.D. are admitted free of charge.

Members of Music on the Hill’s ensemble include Rhode Island-raised professionals oboist Anne Marie Gabriele of the Los Angeles Philharmonic; soprano Diana McVey; guitarist Nicholas Goluses; pianist Lisa Raposa; violinists Gregory Cardi and Kristen Pellegrino; cellist Elisa Kohanski; tubist Tom Gregory; and bassist John M. Pellegrino. Other festival favorites are the Miller-Porfiris Duo, pianist Bonnie Anderson; hornist Leslie Norton; and cellist Trevor Handy. Ocean State artists are organist Terry Lindsay and the Narragansett Brass Quintet (Joseph Foley, Gino Villareal, Alexei Doohovskoy, Kevin Owen and Tom Gregory). Debuting this year are flutist Janet Arms and harpist Rachel Miller.

Music on the Hill’s adventurous programs this year combine highlights of the chamber music repertoire with less familiar gems.
