EGLL 9/10 Softball Team Heads to Regionals – an EG First!

by | Jul 24, 2018

The East Greenwich Little League 9/10 year old softball team has won the Rhode Island state championship and will be traveling later this week to Pennsylvania to participate in the 10-state East Regionals. This is the first time an East Greenwich softball team has advanced to Regionals

The team leaves for Pennsylvania Saturday. EGLL boosters have established a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the trip (July 28 through August 5), including the cost of meals and lodging for the team hopes will be a week-long stay. You can help out by making a donation here.

The team is comprised of 9 and 10 year old girls from East Greenwich who are mostly rising 5th and 6th graders. The team first won the R.I. District 3 tournament by beating teams from South Kingstown and perennial winner Warwick North. They then went on to win the R.I. state tournament in dominating fashion, beating teams from Johnston/Scituate and Portsmouth.
“This is a fantastic group of girls who have really come together as friends and as a team,” said dad Brian Kortz.
As the R.I. state champions, the EGLL team now moves on to the 2018 8/9/10 Little League Softball Eastern Regionals in Jenkins Township, Penn. This is a 9-team tournament comprised of state champions from the New England and Mid-Atlantic states. The tournament starts this coming Saturday and goes through next week. The tournament website where results can be tracked is here:  http://www.padistrict16-31.com/teams/?u=DISTRIT1631&s=baseball.
East Greenwich is scheduled to play Connecticut, Maine, and Vermont in pool play starting Sunday, with a chance to move on to the final four depending on how they do.
The team roster is as follows:
Manager: Bruce Fairbanks
Coaches: Mark Manzo, Rick McAuliffe
Players:
#1 Brooke Faunce
#2 Brooke Fairbanks
#3 Abby McAuliffe
#4 Sara Walsh
#5 Allie Falcon
#6 Mary Murphy
#9 Sophia Williston
#10 Madeline Kortz
#11 Sara Levy
#13 Tess Mahoney
#23 Emma Manzo
See that batter at the plate,
She’s the best in the state!
She has spirit, she has pride,
Too bad for you, she’s on our side!
Best of luck, EGLL 9/10 Girls Softball team!
