A message from the East Greenwich Housing Authority:

If you have seen the construction of 10 new townhouses at 2880 South County Trail moving along, you may be one of the people who has called the East Greenwich Housing Authority asking how to be considered for one of these affordable homes.

The Authority will be opening its waiting lists on Wednesday, Dec. 3, and Thursday, Dec. 4, from 9 until 11:30 a.m. each day. REQUESTS ARE BY TELEPHONE ONLY.  The number is 885-2610.

Other properties’ lists will also be open at that time, including Regal Court at 33 Long St. and the housing units on First Avenue next to the police station.

The authority intends to make the new homes on South County Trail available to Housing Choice Voucher holders. When calling, just ask for an application and give your name and address.  The application you receive will allow you to indicate which type of housing you are interested in, including Housing Choice Voucher. Note that there are two- and three-bedroom homes available on South County Trail. Residents will pay 30 percent of their income toward the rent, with a reduction for some utilities that will be the resident’s responsibility.

The East Greenwich Housing Authority waiting list is organized around two “preferences” – a local preference for applicants who live or work in East Greenwich and a preference for military veterans and veterans families. Applicants with preferences are moved to the top of the waiting list. The authority urges anyone who needs housing assistance to apply. You are under no  obligation to accept housing or relocate if you apply.

Please be aware that it may take several calls to get through, but keep trying. The authority will stop accepting requests at 11:30 a.m. on both days. Household income limits are published on the EGHA’s website, www.eghousing.com.
