Dog Park For East Greenwich?

by | Mar 21, 2014

Warwick has a dog park. North Kingstown opened one last fall. Now, East Greenwich resident Steve Bartlett is asking the Town Council to create one here.

The Kayla Jean Dog Park opened in Quonset in North Kingstown last October.

“As a responsible dog owner, I walk my pet on a leash in my neighborhood several times a day and pick up after her as necessary,” Bartlett wrote in a letter to members of the Town Council. “But to keep my dog healthy, she needs more exercise. She needs to be able to run, chase balls etc., without a leash. We do not have a fenced in yard so I do what other responsible pet owners who live in East Greenwich have to do. We go to the nearest dog park. I can take my dog to Cranston, Warwick, Coventry, Westerly, Wakefield or West Warwick. We don’t bother to go up to Providence, Barrington or over to Newport. But I can’t take her to a dog park in East Greenwich because there is none.”

Toward the end of the letter, he wrote, “Surely the Town of EG could set aside some land and perhaps some funds to challenge the citizens to match the funds to fence in an area for a dog park?”

“I am open to looking into a dog park and I especially like the idea of public/private funding,” Council President Michael Isaacs told Bartlett, via email. “However, before looking into this further, I would want to see where we stand after this year’s budget and see if there is public support for this. We would have to find a suitable location, ascertain the cost and balance that against other priorities.”

Bartlett encouraged Isaacs to come out in favor of a dog park now.

“My concern is that if you wait until the budget is put together, any recommendation/decision will just be put off for another year,” he said via email.

Bartlett also suggested a survey be done through the Town Clerk’s office of owners of licensed dogs.
