How to Use New Town/School Website

Wendy Schmidle wants residents of East Greenwich to get acquainted with the town’s new website. Schmidle is the town’s director of technology as well as a town resident and she’s excited with the new website’s functionality.

Of course, one of the biggest changes is that the schools are now part of the town’s website. While school officials are not happy with the rollout of the new site and what they see as a confusing interface (you can read more about that here), Schmidle likes the combined website, since now everything is in one place.

The new site is mobile friendly – a recognition that many people are using their phones more than their laptop or desktop computers. Eventually, there will be a mobile app for the town, a particular passion of Councilman Sean Todd’s.

But Schmidle says residents need to sign up on the website to get the most benefits out of it. To sign up, you need to click on the Notify Me button on the website’s homepage. From there you can sign up for news and alerts for town boards, schools, as well as the School Committee and its various subcommittees.

For instance, if you want to know when the Planning Board is meeting, you can indicate that. You will get an email about an upcoming meeting as well as an alert if that meeting is cancelled for some reason.

Other tools that should be available in coming weeks include a “fix it” button. If a tree comes down on your street, you will be able to notify Public Works through the website and the town will let you know when the tree will be removed. Or, say there’s a big pothole on your street. You will be able to track when the town learned of the pothole, when it will be repaired and when the work is completed.

But you need to sign up to be a user first. Click here to get started.
