Still No Charges in EG Bomb Investigation

East Greenwich, R.I. – More than a week after two houses were searched and students of East Greenwich High School were questioned by state police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) last week, no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.

The investigation continues, officials say.

The investigation began after remains of a pressure-cooker-type explosive device were found during a search in early April for an elderly Coventry man in West Greenwich near the East Greenwich line.

ATF traced the explosive to at least two EG teenagers, both students at EGHS.

According to ATF spokesman Matt O’Shaughnessy, juveniles usually are not charged in federal court, which would leave the case in state hands.

So far, the state has not charged the individuals.

Juveniles charged with felony offenses are dealt with in family court unless they are waived to be tried as an adult. Cases involving juveniles in family court are confidential.

Legislation proposed late last week by Speaker Nicholas Mattiello would update the existing law to protect against improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by expanding the definition of explosive devices to include any device intended to explode. Right now, state law applies only to traditional bombs and explosives, meaning police cannot charge anyone for making an IED.

East Greenwich Rep. Anthony Giarrusso is a co-sponsor of the bill.
