Sen. Dist. 35 Democratic Primary Forum Set for Aug. 20

by | Aug 5, 2018

Residents are invited to submit questions for the candidates.

East Greenwich News and the East Greenwich Chamber of Commerce are presenting a forum for candidates in the state Senate Dist. 35 Democratic primary contest on Monday, Aug. 20. This is the only opportunity before the Sept. 12 primary to see candidates Bridget Valverde and Greg Acciardo facing questions side by side.

New England Tech has once again generously agreed to host the event at its East Greenwich campus on Division Street. RIPR radio host Chuck Hinman will moderate. The forum will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held in the school’s media theater on the first floor of the main building. Doors open at 5:30.

East Greenwich News is looking for residents from the district to submit questions. Specifically, we are looking for questions about statewide issues the next Dist. 35 senator will face.

Current Sen. Dist. 35 officeholder Mark Gee, a Republican, is not running for reelection. Dana Gee, Mark’s wife, is running as a Republican. She will face the winner of the Democratic primary in the General Election Nov. 6.

Senate Dist. 35 includes most of East Greenwich, and parts of North Kingstown, South Kingstown and Narragansett. The forum is open to all.

Submit your questions by Thursday, Aug. 16, in the comments section below; via email to [email protected]; or via the EG News Facebook page or Twitter account (@egreenwichnews).

What is your top legislative priority for RI in 2018-19?

Do you favor equal pay reform — why or why not?

Will you vote to raise Medicaid eligibility for 6,000 RI seniors
(who earn so little that they pay no state income tax, so they are ineligible to save the tax exemption on their Social Security)
— so that their Medicare Part B Premiums of approximately $130/month are no longer deducted from their Social Security checks,
— and so that federal Medicaid funds will cover 50% of their otherwise uncompensated end-of-life hospital care?
I.e., will you vote for RI to invest $9.6 million/year to save each of these very low income RI seniors $1,560/year, and save all RI taxpayers at least $100 million/year? Why or why not?
