Police Log: Bike Busting Potholes; Apartment Rental Scam

Monday, May 28

1 p.m. – Police were called to the Sunnybrook Farms on Main Street for a report of vandalism. The store clerk told police that when she’d opened up that morning, she saw damage to the windows in the front of the store. There were four windows that were damaged from what appeared to have been a BB gun.

Thursday, May 31

3:05 p.m. – A resident of Sarah’s Trace told police about noise coming from the new batting cage at Archie Cole Middle School, which is a short distance from the man’s house. He told police that the noise is loud when a bat strikes a ball.

3:45 p.m. – The owner of Cartridge World on Main Street reported to police about a customer allegedly using a fraudulent check to buy items at the business. He told police that on May 24 the customer bought a printer and ink cartridges and he wrote a check for $185.05. When the owner went to cash the check, it bounced. Police contacted the customer and he told them that the check cleared from his account. Police advised Cartridge World of this and suggested they hold off on pressing charges. The customer told police he would fix the problem with the store and make sure the amount owed was paid.

Friday, June 1

11:22 a.m. – A Warwick resident told police about a bicycle accident that happened on May 31. She said while she was riding her bicycle down Main Street, she came upon Courthouse Lane where there were many potholes in the road. The woman said the potholes caused her to fall off her bike and that her injuries were bad enough to require a trip to the emergency room.

1:52 p.m. – Police were called to River Farm Drive to speak to a resident who was unhappy about tree cutting across the street. The man told police he was working from home and couldn’t concentrate with the sounds of chainsaws and wood chipper. The man was unhappy because he believed the trees to be town owned and the landscaper crew was dropping the trees in the road.

5 pm – Police met with a man that tried to rent an apartment on Long Street who thinks he’s being scammed. The man told police that on May 20 he saw an ad on Craigslist for a $700 studio apartment on Long Street. He’d told police he’d signed a 1 month lease for $700 with a $400 security deposit added on to it. The man reported he was living in Newport at the time of the online transaction. Police were able to contact the owner of the Long Street address and she told police she was just learned of the fake real estate ad on Craigslist featuring her property.

11:05 p.m. – Police responded to the parking lot behind the area of Sienna Restaurant for a larceny from a vehicle. The reporting party told police that after he got out of work he returned to his car to find that his wallet, golf clubs, North Face jacket, gym bag and boxing gloves were missing from his car. The man reported the car was unlocked. The missing wallet contained his license, a debit card, a health insurance card and $40 in cash. The North Face jacket is estimated at $150, the gym bag is estimated at $200 and the golf bag estimated value is $1,500.

Saturday, June 2

1:29 a.m. – Police arrested a North Kingstown man, 29, on a warrant after they were called to a single car accident on South Road and Tillinghast Road. Routine checks showed the man had an active warrant out of Providence Police Department for violatng a protection order. He was taken into custody and transported to EGPD headquarters for processing. Later he was turned over to Providence police.

5:25 p.m. – Police arrested a North Kingstown man, 52, for shoplifting at Dave’s Market, 1000 Division St. The Dave’s manager told police the man left the parking lot in a silver Toyota. A cashier said the man walked past the register with items sticking out of his pockets and as if he was holding something under his shirt. The manager reviewed the video surveillance footage and it showed the man come into the store and take several items, concealing them on his person. The manager told police that on Monday the IT person would be in and he could better review the footage and see what exactly was taken. The only item the manager could make out was a cup of Dave’s Soup valued at $6.99. Checks of the car’s registration showed it belonged to a North Kingstown woman. North Kingstown police went to the house and the car wasn’t there. NKPD spoke with the woman and she said her son was using her car. Police called him and told him that he needed to come to EGPD headquarters to talk to them about what happened at Dave’s. The man reported that he stopped in the store to use the restroom, and when he didn’t find it, he’d left. Police did ask him if he picked up any items while he was in the store, and he’d told police he didn’t. Police also asked the man if he was pushing a shopping cart and he’d said he wasn’t sure. The man told police he didn’t take anything from Dave’s. He was charged with shoplifting and was processed and released. Police issued him a District Court summons.

Sunday, June 3

8:17 p.m. – Police arrested a West Greenwich woman, 45, for driving while intoxicated after being alerted that a black Cadillac had just hit a car on Main Street and kept going in the direction of First Avenue. While police were in the area on Division Street they were alerted that the suspect car was coming up towards the Route 4. Police caught up to the car on Division Street near the Route 4 ramp to 95 north. Police noted the Cadillac was weaving from lane to lane and nearly hit the middle divider. Police stopped the car to the entrance of 1149. Police asked the driver, a woman, for her license, registration and insurance. She pulled out her license but that was all. She gave police a blank stare. The woman smelled of alcohol and her eyes were bloodshot. She asked to talk to her lawyer rather than complete field sobriety test, so police arrested her on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. She was processed at EGPD, issued a District Court summons and released.

8:30 p.m. – Police arrested a Scituate man, 24, for driving while intoxicated after police were called to Main Street on a report of a hit and run car accident. The victim told officers that the alleged suspect car was an older white VW convertible. The victim told police that the car that hit him was heading south on Main Street towards North Kingstown. Police caught up with the car on Post Road, over the line in North Kingstown. After EGPD officers investigated the accident, they called for another EGPD officer to conduct the field sobriety tests.The man failed the field sobriety tests; he was taken into custody and transported her to EGPD headquarters for processing. He was charged with driving under the influence (first offense) and Duty to Stop- Accident, resulting with damage to an unattended car. He was issued a Third District Court summons and released to his mother.
