Joyce (Corey) Richard, 72, after courageously battling ALS, died peacefully at home in East Greenwich on January 17. In addition to her husband, Gerry, she leaves a daughter, Michelle Lally, M.D., of Cumberland; a son, David Richard, and daughter-in-law, Sara Castro, of London, England; a sister, Ann Corey of Cranston, and four grandchildren, Christopher Lally, Jessica Lally, Nicolas Richard and Maria Richard. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Joseph Richard of Naples, Fla., and many nephews, nieces and friends who remained close to her during her illness.

Joyce was born in Providence, the daughter of the late, Chester and Susie (Permanente) Corey. She was a graduate of Classical High School and Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing. She held a B.S. in nursing from Rhode Island College and an MBA in Health Care Management from Bryant College. Her career in nursing included positions of assistant head nurse of medical intensive care at Rhode Island Hospital, and management positions in public health nursing with Woonsocket, Providence and Kent County Visiting Nurses. She also taught courses at the Community College of Rhode Island to students training to become certified nursing assistants.

Joyce was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church in East Greenwich, and St. Finbarr Church in Naples, Fla. She was active in the Council of Catholic Women at St. Finbarr.

Joyce enjoyed being with her many friends who participated in water aerobics, card playing, and events connected with the Gulf Winds Red Hat Society in Naples. She was an avid gardener and she loved sailing on Narragansett Bay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 65 Third St., East Greenwich. Burial will be private. Calling hours are Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for ALS research to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute, 540 E. Jefferson St., Suite 202, Iowa City, IA 52245 (www.jp2mri.org).
