After the snow falls and the streets are plowed, there’s still one big job that needs to be done – digging out fire hydrants, those squat little plugs that sit near to the street for easy access but inevitably get buried when plows push the snow to the sides of the road.
This winter has been especially challenging.
“We have over 400 hydrants in town and with storm after storm it has been quite the project keeping them clear,” said Fire Chief Russell McGillivray. “We certainly would appreciate any help the public could give us by clearing hydrants near their homes.”
So, there it is – we residents have our marching orders. If you clear a hydrant, send us a picture of you and the hydrant – EG News would love to run a photo gallery of all our hydrant helpers!

Thanks for the reminder!
who do we contact to find out where the hydrants are located? I would be glad to help out, but I’m not quite sure where to start…
Good question – let me get back to you.
Skip, EGFD Chief McGillivray says Thanks and to call 886-8688 and ask for the duty officer, then explain what you need and they can help.
