East Greenwich, R.I. – Police said Monday that a 61-year-old woman died Sunday night after her car was hit on Division Street by another vehicle.

The accident took place around at around 10:45 p.m. The driver of one vehicle, a 49-year-old North Providence man, was outside his car, lying nearby. He was conscious. He was taken to Kent Hospital; his condition is unknown.

The driver of the second car, a 61-year-old woman from Warwick, was still sitting behind the wheel. She was in and out of consciousness, according to police. The woman was taken to Rhode Island Hospital; she died while being treated in the emergency room.

Two people, driving separate cars, told police they witnessed the accident. Both said they were driving east on Division Street when they saw a car heading toward them in the eastbound lane. Both said they had to veer off to the right and off the road to avoid a head-on collision. Both said they saw the car driving the wrong way hit the next eastbound car, the car driven by the Warwick woman.

The witnesses stopped to help. Police from both second and third shifts reported to the accident, along with members of the fire department. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released.
