Gianna Cirella, daughter of EGPD Deputy Chief Skip Cirella.

Gianna Cirella, the 16-year-old daughter of EGPD Deputy Chief Stanley “Skip” Cirella, died Wednesday after coming down with an illness two and a half weeks ago.

Dep. Chief Cirella said via email, “Gianna lost her battle earlier today. She passed peacefully with Tara, Cassie, and me by her side. Thanks for the well wishes.”

Gianna was a junior at Toll Gate High School in Warwick, where she played on the soccer team as a goalkeeper. She fell ill the weekend of Oct. 14-15 with a sore throat that swiftly transformed to pneumonia in both lungs and sepsis, a deadly blood infection. She had been in the intensive care unit at  Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

We will post the obituary when it becomes available.
